United Nations Human Rights Council
Topic Summary
The Detention and Deportation of Stateless Individuals
This committee would discuss how member states should approach the detention and future treatment of foreign nationals without legal status. In particular, it will discuss standards of detention and the obligations for member states to remove nationals from detention as quickly as possible. It will also discuss what the obligation of states are in the case where deporting a foreign national conflicts with a non-refoulement obligation due to a detainee fearing persecution or death if deported back to their home country. It will also discuss the controversial practice of deportation to a third country which has been discussed/used by Western countries recently.
Meet your Director!
Dear Delegates,
It is with immense pleasure that I welcome you to the United Nations Human Rights Council! My name is Darshanik, and I am honored to be your Director for HMUN Australia 2026. I’m super excited to meet all of you and hear about your innovative resolutions in committee!
HMUN Australia is very special because it is a local conference for me! I’m born and raised in Western Sydney and went to high school in Carlingford. I’m currently a Sophomore (second year) at Harvard pursuing a double concentration (Harvard’s fancy word for major) in Government and Economics. Throughout high school I competed in MUN through the Evatt Model UN Competition and I now have the privilege of supporting high school MUN conferences through HMUN. I graduated from high school in 2023 so I sadly wasn’t able to participate in HMUN Australia’s first in-person conference last year which is why I’m super excited to be serving as your Director for the UNHRC at HMUN Australia 2026! Outside of MUN, I’m involved in many extracurriculars, including debate, consulting, and editing for the political review. In my free time I enjoy biking down the Charles River, trying new restaurants, watching sitcoms, and playing board/card games with my blocking group!
During committee, I look forward to an engaging, fun, and productive debate. I value creativity in resolutions and delegates that are pragmatic, yet diplomatic in their engagement. Overall delegates that are creative, collaborative and engaging will be the most memorable! As your committee chair, I hope to run a committee that is lively and engaging, but also fun and welcoming for all delegates. I hope that you will join me in making HMUN Australia 2026 a conference to remember.
I look forward to all of your creative ideas and thoughtful debate in committee. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to shoot me an email, whether it be questions pertaining to the background guide, inquiries about how the committee will be run, or anything else (even just to say hello)!
Sincerely,
Darshanik Aryal
